Gripping, emotional and perfectly paced!
Briar Boleyn has done it again! After absolutely falling in love with Queen of Roses, I thought it would be impossible to top it but I just couldn't get enough of just how fantastic this second book is.
I absolutely loved the unusual and exciting setting of an underground volcanic palace which was so different to the usual fantasy tropes, and I was completely hooked by the trials/contest plot-line that was very quickly established.
The spicy scenes were upped to another level in this book and really cemented the developing closeness and relationship between the two main characters, Morgan and Draven. Speaking of Morgan, I will admit she unfortunately really irritated me throughout due to her constant accusations and rejections of a man who was nothing but honourable, loyal and just super kind to her but was struggling with his inner demons, past trauma and external factors weighing down on him. I really hope these two get their happy ending by the close of the series, I know they can't have it just yet but I want it so bad for them- the tender and loving moments they share are everything and they deserve them all.
My favourite characters in this book were easily Rychel and Beks; the found family trope is one of my absolute favourites and I'm so glad Morgan finally had some people who she felt she could trust and care about her through these fantastic additions to the series.
In terms of world-building and lore, the imagery and mood created throughout this book by Boleyn was excellently captured and made everything feel so real and lifelike which really added to the tension, pacing and drama. I am completely in love with this world created, developed and expanded by Boleyn and I don't think I can wait until the end of March for the fourth instalment!
Once again, thank you so much Briar Boleyn for continuing to bless us readers with your magic, I cannot wait for more!
